A favorite trail of ours is Grand Park, located in the northern region of Mt Rainier National Park. The approach is located just outside the park boundary, where only a National Forest pass is needed (or an America the Beautiful pass will work too). About half a mile in, there is a sign marking the park boundary. These lead through the old-growth forest, past ground vegetation, to a backcountry camp and Lake Eleanor.

After debating about camping and taking pictures of the lake, the trail continues through the forest passing by windfall, ponds, and views of the surrounding cliffs. Something odd changes with the trees. They get smaller and denser until, like a wall, the trees stop and the meadow begins. It brings memories of The Sound of Music. Mt Rainier looms in the distance, but this isn’t the grandest of the meadows. The trail enters the forest again and starts to climb. It isn’t very long when the trees thin, the flowers show their color, and the grass appears. This is Grand Park. It’s like an infinity pool, but a meadow, that seems to fall off a cliff. Mt Rainier is in full view.

Continue down the trail as far as you want. I usually turn around when I can see Mt. Freemont Lookout.
